Lowering the Cost of Living

This session, I authored Assembly Bill 48 which would provide healthy school meals to students in all schools in the state free of cost. This would have saved families an estimated $2,400 a year in grocery costs.

I also authored Assembly Bill 1050 to cap the total amount of a families income going to childcare within the Wisconsin Shares program at 7%. Childcare should not such a high financial burden that someone has to choose between working and taking care of their children.

Finally, I authored Assembly Bill 1100 which would have the sales tax on over the counter drugs.

Strengthening Education

I authored the creation of “Grow Your Own” teaching grants through Assembly Bill 1101 to both cover part of the cost of licensure for new teachers in the state and support clubs and organizations in our schools that help encourage students to consider teaching.

I sponsored legislation to increase the special education reimbursement rate to 60% in Assembly Bill 1176 so out schools have the tools they need to serve all students.

I voted against the 2025-27 State Budget because it included no additional general aid for education despite raising district’s revenue limits, which causes in increase to your property taxes. I sponsored AB 1176 to fix this issue and use state aid to fully fund public education without raising your property taxes.

Housing Affordability

I cosponsored Assembly Bill 52 to expand the homestead tax credit. This is a refundable tax credit for homeowners and renters who make less than $24,680 a year. AB-052 increases the maximum household income from $24,680 to $35,000 and indexes it to inflation for the future.

I also cosponsored Assembly Bill 976 to expand the Low Income Housing Tax Credit. This tax credit is administered by the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Association (WHEDA) to qualified low income housing projects. WHEDA currently receives $42,000,000 for the program, AB-976 would increase that funding to 100,000,000.

Safeguarding Women’s Reproductive Freedom

I sponsored Assembly Bill 355, which creates the right of bodily autonomy for all individuals in the state. Under the bill, the state may not prohibit an individual from obtaining an abortion if an abortion is necessary in the professional judgment of the individual’s medical provider. 

I was also a sponsor of two landmark bills that passed into law to support women receiving lifesaving healthcare. Act 102 ensures that postpartum care is covered under Medicaid and Act 103 (Gail’s Law) requires all insurance companies in the state to have coverage for all breast cancer screenings.

Strengthening Public Safety

I Authored Assembly Bill 1223 to create a tuition loan program for individuals in the state seeking higher education as a teacher, firefighter, or police officer. The bill creates a forgivable loan program administered by the Higher Educational Aids Board to pay tuition and fees of University of Wisconsin System and technical college students committed to completing at least 10 years in one of these careers.

I also voted to pass a number of bills to strengthen public safety including Act 21 to create further protections to police and fire animal units, Act 97 to create a penalty for the sale and installation of counterfeit or nonfunctional airbags, and Act 219 to create a public awareness campaign for youth internet safety administered by the Department of Justice.
